First stop is Nosy Komba, the "lemur island", where habituated black lemurs live semi-wild around the village — they will happily pose on a branch beside you. Browse the craft market where local women sell embroidered tablecloths and wood carvings before the boat continues to tiny Nosy Vorona, a birdlife islet, and then to Nosy Tanikely National Marine Park.
Tanikely is a protected no-fishing zone, and it shows: expect clouds of reef fish, sea turtles grazing metres from shore, rays and healthy coral in two to five metres of clear water — ideal snorkeling for beginners and children. Lunch is served on the beach between swims.

Nosy Be and its islands are a malaria-risk area, so it’s worth being prepared. Bring insect repellent with DEET or icaridin, and light long sleeves help on the shaded forest path up Nosy Komba, especially early or late in the day. Talk to your doctor or a travel clinic about antimalarial tablets before you travel. Out on the boat and snorkelling at Tanikely you’re in sun and sea breeze, where mosquitoes are much less of an issue.

For some tours we ask for a deposit the day before departure, paid in cash to your guide when you meet. Everything else is paid to your guide on the day of the tour, in cash (EUR, USD or MGA) or by mobile money. We never ask for online payments or bank transfers — if anyone contacts you claiming to be us and asks for one, it is not us.

Just across the water from Nosy Be, the green cone of Nosy Komba rises straight out of the sea. A short boat hop brings you to the little village of Ampangorina, where a shaded forest path climbs past craft stalls into the trees. Our local guide knows every animal that lives here — and within minutes you are face to face with some of Madagascar's most charismatic creatures.
The stars of Nosy Komba are its black lemurs. The males are jet-black, while the females — confusingly — are a warm russet-brown with dazzling white cheeks and bright orange eyes. They are wild, but completely at ease around people. Hold out a piece of banana and one may spring lightly onto your arm or shoulder, take it in tiny hands and study you with those amber eyes. It is the kind of moment you will still be talking about long after you are home.
Our guides handle the feeding themselves, with a little fruit and a lot of respect — no cages, nothing forced, just a close and gentle encounter on the animals' own terms.
Tucked into a fork in the branches, the Nosy Be sportive lemur dozes through the heat of the day, huge round eyes half-open. It only truly wakes after dark, when it leaps between trunks to feed on leaves. Our guide knows exactly which tree to check — and finding one blinking sleepily back at you is a quiet, special highlight.
You will often meet other lemurs too — gentle brown lemurs that watch you from the higher branches, curious and unhurried, framed by leaves and dappled sunlight.
Madagascar is famous for its chameleons, and the panther chameleon is a living jewel — shifting from emerald to turquoise as it inches along a branch, each eye swivelling on its own. Then your guide points at a bare trunk and, slowly, something impossible resolves out of the bark: a leaf-tailed gecko, pressed flat against the wood, its frilled edges and mottled skin making it all but vanish. Once you have spotted it, you will never quite trust a tree trunk again.
Do not let the Madagascar tree boa alarm you — it is entirely harmless and the calmest character in the whole forest. If you like, the guide will let it curl around your shoulders: cool, smooth and surprisingly heavy. It makes a brilliant photo, and it is the quickest cure there is for a fear of snakes.
Roosting quietly against a trunk, the Madagascar scops owl is barely bigger than your hand. By day it sits perfectly still, trusting its bark-coloured feathers to keep it hidden — until a sharp-eyed guide points it out and it slowly opens two golden eyes to look you over.
After the forest, the boat carries on to Nosy Tanikely, a protected marine park ringed by coral. Slip on a mask and you drop straight into a warm, clear aquarium of parrotfish, angelfish and green sea turtles gliding over the reef. Lunch is served in the shade on the beach, and there is time to swim, snorkel again, or climb to the little lighthouse for the view before the boat turns for home.
